Advances in the understanding of bone biology and the role of the RANK/RANKL/OPG pathway have opened new treatment avenues for osteoporosis.
In her introduction to a panel of speakers discussing new horizons in the treatment of osteoporosis, incoming Canadian Geriatrics Society President Dr. Angela Juby first encouraged listeners to recall the definition of osteoporosis.
In her address to geriatrics trainees, Dr. Sharon Marr aimed to promote a clearer understanding of the cellular changes accompanying aging, to clarify basic concepts relevant to DNA and gene expression that affect senescence, to detail cellular defense mechanisms, and to review the clinical implications of cellular senescence.
Dr. Juan Carlos Monge spoke about the role of testosterone in the regulation of the cardiovascular system, as well as about the effects of hypogonadism and testosterone replacement on some cardiovascular risk factors.

Dr. Alexandra Papaioannou reviewed the results of Phase 3 trials of denosumab, which she described “an exciting new compound” under investigation.
Dr. Brian Wong began by acknowledging the breadth of the topic of patient safety. Traditionally, he noted, training and focus on this area has been poor; now, it is receiving increasing levels of recognition.
