A Pain in the Neck

Mental stress is currently a major culprit for neck pain, and usually associated with bilateral Trapezius muscle pain- which differentiates it with degenerative -type diseases. Though imaging is not indicated, it does help to differentiate one from the other and may satisfy the patient's concerns.

re A Pain in the Neck

Mechanical neck pain frequently radiates to both trapezius ridges so this pattern is not diagnostic of mental stress. Anxiety or tension or any other emotional or stressful situation does aggravate mechanical neck pain so an increase in symptoms associated with psychological stressors would certainly suggest a “mental stress” issue. Tension produces posterior cervical and trapezius pain (it is a common cause of headache as well) so although the locations are not diagnostic they are certainly suggestive.
