Editor's Note, Volume 13 Issue 6

D’Arcy Little, MD, CCFP, FCFP, FRCPC Medical Director, JCCC and HealthPlexus.NET

We are pleased to present the last issue of 2023 of the Journal of Current Clinical Care, which as usual, features a collection of articles on important clinical topics across various specialties. Throughout the year we aimed to provide you with practical insights and updates to enhance your clinical practice.

In this edition, we have articles that cover Back Health, Dermatology, A Diabetes Complications Case Study, and Ethics.

The Back Health CME Resource article, written by Drs. Vishal Varshney, Jill Osborn, Ramesh Sahjpaul, Scott Paquette, and Phillippe Magown, focuses on Neuromodulation for the Management of Chronic Pain After Spinal Surgery. Chronic neuropathic pain is associated with substantial disability and societal economic impact. In appropriately selected patients, where medical management has been unsuccessful, the minimally invasive surgical technique of spinal cord stimulation can reduce disability and chronic pain after spinal surgery.

In the Dermatology article, Dr. Joseph Lam and Yvonne Deng present Pediatric Psoriasis. Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that affects up to 1.4% of children with a strong genetic predisposition and is mediated by dysregulation in the crosstalk between the innate and adaptive immune responses. With the advent of biologics, the treatment landscape for pediatric psoriasis has shifted and encompasses diverse modalities of therapeutics, including topical and systemic treatments, as well as phototherapy.

In the Ethics article: Phonealcoholism: A Serious Addiction, Dr. Michael Gordon provides insights into the reality of various addictions.

Dr. Louis-Philippe Girard offers a Case Study on Diabetes Complications: Diabetic Nephropathy. Diabetic Nephropathy refers to specific pathologic structural and functional changes seen in the kidneys of patients with DM that result from the effects of DM on the kidney.

We also want to highlight three podcasts in this edition, which we hope you find interesting and informative. Dr. Marina Malak presents a series on Back Pain with her 3P: Pills, Pearls, and Patients podcast. Dr. Michael Gordon’s Medical Narratives podcast offers A Breakthrough in Alzheimer’s Disease Treatment: The Approval of Lecanemab with guest, Dr. Sharon Cohen, and Dr. D’Arcy Little’s Inside Radiology: A Primary Care Perspective offers an Approach to Acute Abdominal Pain.

We hope you find this edition informative and valuable in your clinical practice. As always, we welcome your feedback and suggestions.
