In his article Grey Tsunami: A Dangerous Metaphor in Aging Discourse, Dr. Michael Gordon, from the Baycrest Centre of Geriatric Care in Toronto, explains the role certain words in the English language play when describing the challenges of the aging population. Physicians should be aware of the negative stereotype associated with such terms as tsunami to describe the older patients for whom they care.
Jordan Isenberg and his co-authors describe Merkel Cell Carcinoma: A Case Report and Brief Review of the Literature. Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare and aggressive cutaneous malignancy seen most frequently in Caucasian males over age 60. The mainstay of treatment is surgical: standard wide local excision or MOHs chemosurgery. Early diagnosis and treatment are of the utmost importance.
Dr. Pradeep Shenoy and his colleagues offer A Case of Congenital Nasolacrimal Duct Mucocele. Although CNDM is rare, prolapse or expansion of the mucocele of lacrimal sac into the nose can cause nasal obstruction, respiratory distress and difficulty in feeding, as newborns are preferential nasal breathers. Clinical features, investigations, and treatment modalities are described after reviewing the literature.
