AA: Hello there. It's a pleasure to meet you all. My name is Alykhan Abdulla, and I am the co-host of Med Talks Beyond the White Coat. This is our very first podcast, and I am excited. I am beyond excited to participate in this with you and to share our surprising guest. But let me tell you a little bit about what the intention of Med Talks is, and it'll be a lot easier when I introduce our guest.

00;00;44;07 - 00;01;12;15
AA: Med Talks Beyond the White Coat is an opportunity to understand about leadership. And we're going to meet some incredible leaders and you will get to hear from them about their stories and what they've gone through to achieve their leadership role, their struggles, their challenges, their successes, and the things that they learned along the way to make sure that they were prepared and ready and confident to move forward in their leadership role.

00;01;12;17 - 00;01;41;26
AA: And more importantly, you're going to hear advice. Advice that they want to share. Advice to help others who are motivated to follow in their footsteps, to climb up on their shoulders and move forward to their next leadership challenge. So with that, I would like to introduce our very first podcast guest, Dr. Kathleen Ross. Dr. Kathleen Ross is the president of the Canadian Medical Association.

00;01;41;28 - 00;02;08;16
AA: She grew up in small town Port Coquitlam, British Columbia. She's a mother of two and she's been married for 35 years. In addition to doing clinical work in family medicine, comprehensive family medicine, she also has done work in obstetrics and surgical assisting during this entire time period. She was also previously the President of the Doctors of B.C., which is a feat upon itself.

00;02;08;19 - 00;02;38;20
AA: It's British Columbia's provincial Medical Association for its 15,000 doctors. And in addition to that, she's been involved in health care and health care policy and led many grassroots improvements. Those include the chair of the Fraser Northwest Division of Family Practice and the president of the medical staff of the Royal Columbian Hospital. She's a founding member of the Doctors of B.C. Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Group.

00;02;38;22 - 00;03;07;00
AA: She's had the opportunity to be the lead in regards to anti-racism and unconscious bias. She's helped elevate all kinds of leaders in all kinds of positions using her skill sets of diversity and thoughtfulness. She was involved in the physician quality improvement. She chairs the CMA administrative burden and working Group and participates in the McMaster National Fellows Program for Health Care Leadership.

00;03;07;02 - 00;03;28;26
AA: And this is the part that I'm hoping that we can get into today. I'm hoping we can talk about her volunteerism because it was her service in her past that has been the absolute cornerstone for the type of leadership that she brings, authentic and honest. She worked in the Andean regions of Peru, and she speaks some of their languages, believe it or not.

00;03;28;29 - 00;03;47;14
AA: She's also helped and spent time with the Girl Guides of Canada. And before that, she was honoured with the Terry Fox Wall of Fame in Coquitlam in 2019. With that, I'm excited to introduce you. Dr. Kathleen Ross. Dr. Ross, how are you?

Welcome back to another episode of Inside Radiology, a Primary Care Perspective podcast. I'm Dr. Darcy Little, your host, a community radiologist with a background in primary care. In today's episode, we're decoding chest X-rays, identifying common findings and their clinical significance.

Our learning objectives today are, first and foremost to help you be a better clinician than the doctors on scrubs who put the x-rays backwards. But in reality, our objectives are to review basic radiology principles and to formalize a detailed approach to the interpretation of the chest radiograph with multiple illustrated examples. Just a flashback. It was not that long ago, November 1895, when Conrad Röentgen discovered the X-ray, and he noticed that it traveled through paper, wood and aluminum, and he called it X-radiation. But we sometimes call it Röentgen radiation to signify that he discovered it. And this X-ray on the right, on the lower aspect is were thought to be his hand. One of the first X-rays ever taken. We've come a long way since Röentgen.

Welcome to the Inside Radiology, a primary care perspective podcast where we bring you expert insights and discussions on the topic of radiology as it relates to primary care practice. In today's episode, we delve into the world of back pain, a very common condition faced by primary care physicians and patients, and the role of imaging in its diagnosis and management.

I'm your host, Dr. D'Arcy Little, a radiologist who has also practiced in primary care. And today our guest is Dr. Hamilton Hall, a well-known spine surgeon and well-known educator on this topic of back pain. Together, we'll attempt to shed light on what primary care physicians should know when treating patients with back pain and help to navigate the complexities of ordering tests if needed in this condition.

Let's dive in. So, as we all know, low back pain is a leading cause of disability worldwide. And it's the second most common symptom related reason for seeking care from a primary care physician. And despite increasing spending on health care services, patient outcomes really have not improved overall and global disability has not improved overall and in fact continues to increase over time from this condition.

Dr. Hall, we welcome you today to help us discuss this topic.

Welcome to Inside Radiology: A Primary Care Perspective. The primary podcast where we explore the world of radiology and its applications in primary care. I'm your host, Dr. D'Arcy Little, a radiologist and primary care physician with a passion for leveraging radiology imaging to provide optimal patient care. In today's episode will lay the foundation by understanding the importance of radiology in primary care and exploring its various applications.

00;00;39;26 - 00;01;05;07
Let's dive in. Radiology is an essential component of modern medicine, playing a crucial role in the diagnosis, the management and the monitoring of various medical conditions. As primary care physicians, we encounter a wide range of patient cases, and having a solid understanding of radiology can significantly enhance our ability to provide accurate and timely care. So why is radiology important in primary care?

00;01;05;23 - 00;01;42;07
Well, imaging studies such as X-rays, ultrasounds, CTs and MRIs allow us to visualize internal structures, identify abnormalities and guide our clinical decision making. By incorporating radiology into our diagnostic process. We can gain valuable insights and often avoid unnecessary referrals to specialists. In primary care one of the most commonly encountered radiologic tests is the chest X-ray. It provides a wealth of information helping us to understand lung conditions, to detect pneumonia, to evaluate cardiac health, and to identify other thoracic abnormalities such as lung cancer.

00;01;42;26 - 00;02;13;10
We'll explore this further in upcoming episodes. Additionally, abdominal imaging, including ultrasounds, CT scans and MRIs play an important role in primary care. They aid in evaluating abdominal pain, diagnosing gastrointestinal disorders, assessing organ health, and detecting abnormalities like tumours and cysts, and will delve further into that topic as well. Radiology is not limited to adult patients. It is equally important in paediatrics.

00;02;13;23 - 00;02;37;03
Children often present unique challenges, and understanding how to interpret and utilize radiologic studies specific to paediatric care is crucial in primary care. We will dedicate an episode to discussing paediatric radiology and common conditions we see in primary care. To make the most of radiologic studies, it's important for a primary care physicians to become familiar with the language of radiology reports.

00;02;37;25 - 00;03;08;01
These reports provide us with detailed information about the findings, impressions and recommendations of the radiologist. In a future episode will break down these reports, explain the terminology and decipher their structure to help you understanding. Now that we've discussed the significance of radiology in primary care, it's important to address appropriate utilization. Ordering the right test at the right time is essential to optimize patient care and avoid unnecessary radiation exposure and unnecessary health care costs.

00;03;08;23 - 00;03;37;18
We'll explore the evidence based guidelines and appropriateness criteria in an upcoming issue. Throughout the podcast series, we'll cover a wide range of topics, including MSK imaging, neuroimaging, women's health and much more. Our goal is to equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary to incorporate radiology effectively into your primary care practice. Before we wrap up the short introductory episode, I'd like to invite you to actively participate in the podcast.
